The conference focused on topics related to local and national security challenges, disaster risk reduction and crisis management during natural disasters such as fires, floods and earthquakes. We also got an insight into new projects and technologies for safer cities and communities, with a special focus on Smart City projects, video surveillance, traffic systems, communications, cyber security, and similar areas.
This year, the two-day conference hosted more than 150 distinguished experts in urban security and civil and private protection.
The conference was opened by Marijan Vundać, president of the Croatian Counties/Cities Disaster Risk Reduction Platform and Bojan Simonič, Mayor of Lovran Municipality.
Other participants included representatives of domestic and foreign private companies – Brombul, Eccos inženjering, GDi, King ICT, Končar Digital, Markoja, Radio-Moto, Lynx Security, Securitas Hrvatska, Sokol Security, Tehnet, Dahua Technology (China) and JaP-Jacina (Czechia) – but also state institutions such as the Faculty of Political Sciences, HGSS, Hrvatske vode, Institute for Security Policies, Directorate of Civil Protection Directorate of the Republic of Croatia, Zagreb City Office of Emergency Management, and many others.

Kristijan Špehar, project manager at our Department of Automation and Energy Management, held a presentation on the topic “Monitoring of surface and underground water and critical infrastructure”, emphasizing the process instrumentation that the company uses to measure the level, quality and flow of water – particularly for application in hydropower and water supply and drainage – as well as specialized measurements for technical monitoring of facilities of national importance (dams, ponds, bridges, embankments, tunnels, etc.).
In addition, there was talk of industrial process automation, for which Markoja has experts in electrotechnical design, execution and commissioning; production of control and distribution cabinets; PLC programming; design of HMI and SCADA interfaces; and installation of monitoring and control systems (NUS) at several locations in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
The journal Zaštita (“Protection”) has held the SIGG conference for 16 years, dealing with issues of urban security, crisis management, civil protection, and the use of new technologies for safer cities and local communities.
